چکیده

Like the protagonists in the previous works, Harry Haller does not fit comfortably into the social expectations of a middle-class, masculine identity. Because he conceives of himsetf as both man and wolf, he cannot feel synonymous with either image, cannot possess a single identity, masculine or otherwise. Like Törleß, Harry perceives more than one level of reality and in order to relieve his self-torment, he needs to discover the relationship between them. In order to do this, however, he must recognize that a middleclass, masculine identity is only one among innumerable possible identities.
